http://www.pauldickman.com/teaching/sas/missing.php

1)Numeric missing values are represented by a single period (.).

2)Character missing values are represented by a single blank enclosed in quotes (’ ‘).

3) in some wrds database, missing values are marked with special characters (.A, .S, .Z, ._, etc).

Normally, missing(var) will tell SAS if there is a numeric or character missing value.
However, for the 3) situation, missing function will not work.

if var = ’ ’ then do; var = var2; end;

should be useful here.
