Hi all,
I am new in here. So, please accept my apology for any inconvenience this may cause.
Please help me to find the nation of foreign institutions.
Following example clearly explains what I need.

By using “Stock Ownership Summary”, I was able to collect data related to the io_for.
I am looking for the country where the foreign institution is from.
For example, Trigon Healthcare Inc. (entity_proper_name) issues securities, 2894115 (SEDOL).
This company has a unique ID, 0019RL-E (factset entity ID). And, the domicile of this company is US (sec_country).
In 3/31/2001, there are 218 institutions holding this security. And, foreign institutional ownership (io_for) is about 0.0175.
It implies there are foreign institutions among 218 institutions.
I need to find which country these foreign institutions are from.

If you know how, please share with me.
Thank you so much for your time.

hi Learner,

Do you have access to Thomson S34? https://wrds-web.wharton.upenn.edu/wrds/tools/variable.cfm?library_id=57&file_id=66948

Unless I am mistaken, both Thomson and Factsheet are using form 13f filings for institutions. Thomson has a ‘country’ field for the institution.

Hope this helps,

Joost

Thank you for your reply.
Unfortunately, our school doesn’t subscribe the Thomson.
I checked the variable list.
As you said, yes there is country.
I hope I can find a way to get this data.

Thank you.

hi,

Another possibility is to download the 13f filings yourself and retrieve the institution’s address (which is part of the header, and can be extracted with a regular expression). The unfortunate thing is that this would be quite some effort for something that is already available in Thomson.

Best regards,

Joost

Thank you for helping me out.

I have another question regarding ISO_COUNTRY.

Under “Factset - Annual Fiscal(North America - US and Canada)” and “Factset - Annual Fiscal(International - NON US and Canada)”, there exists “iso_country”
By WRDS definition under these datasets, it is “Two-letter code for the country in which the security is domiciled”.
So, it is a country where a headquarter of company(issuing a security) is located. Then, this iso_country is not related a country where the institution (holding a part of this security) is located.

On the other hand, under “FactSet Ownership (LionShares) - Institutions” dataset, iso_country is defined as “A two-letter code for the country in which the entity is domiciled. This would be the country that corresponds to the entity’s headquarters”. In here, what is exactly “entity”? Is it a company issuing a security or is it an institution holding a part of security?

Additionally, under “Factset - Stock Ownership Summary”, there is “domicile country”.
In this dataset, what is this domicile country for? Is it a country where the security is domiciled or where the institution is located?

Perhaps, I don’t quiet understand what exactly “entity” implies in FactSet.

Could you please help me understand clearly?

Thank you so much for your time.
And, please accept my apology for any inconvenience this may cause.

hi,

No problem. To figure out what these variables mean, would it not make sense to get a few firms, and see the data what the data looks like? If you take firm A (say a cross-listed firm from China) and institution X, you should be able to see what the country fields hold. There may also be an entity name variable, if so, that should be helpful.

There is also a table that holds entity type codes -> description, see: https://wrds-web.wharton.upenn.edu/wrds/tools/variable.cfm?library_id=135&file_id=77883

So if the table holds an entity type code, you can also see what type of entity it is.

Best regards,

Joost
