Hi,

I am doing research on conglomerates and pure play firms, and I am trying to make a database with the following:

I want to include all listed European companies via Compustat Global, and match them with the number of operating segments they operate in by the corresponding GIC code.
I cannot find it trough Compustat Global. Is this possible? And if not, are there other possibilities?

Thank you in advance.

hi Hemmat,

I have not come across an equivalent of Compustat Segments for non-US companies. I will post a message on the Google group and will post any replies here.

Best regards,

Joost

Hi Joost,

Thank you for your reply. What about listed US companies? Is this possible? And if so, should I use CRPS or Compustat for this?

Is there also any difference between customer and historical/non historical segments?

Thank you in advance.

hi Hemmat,

I am not sure if it is in the web interface, but this SAS code pulls in Compustat Segments that goes way back (you need to log in first; also rename myLib in the rsubmit to a library that works for you):

rsubmitproc download data=comp.wrds_segmerged out=myLib.wrds_segmerged;runendrsubmit

The dataset (wrds_segmerged) is described here: https://wrds-web.wharton.upenn.edu/wrds/tools/variable.cfm?library_id=7&file_id=95224

Take a look at this macro to get an idea of how to identify unique segments (there are many doubles unless properly filtered): http://www.wrds.us/index.php/repository/view/34

Customer is about large customers, not about segments.

Best regards,

Joost
