Where can I find industry averages for book-to-market share ratios?

Hey guys,

I am currently working on my thesis and I want to benchmark book-to-market ratios of my sample with the industry averages (favorably using the NACE Rev.2), however I am unable to find any data on these averages.
I have searched elsewhere but also to no avail. Are industry benchmarks really not included in the databases or did I just overlook them?

Thanks a lot!

hi,

This is something that is constructed. If measuring book-to-market yearly, you would get variables like equity, shares outstanding, stock price, and industry variable from Compustat Annual (for firm-years). You would then compute the industry-year average with proc sql using ‘group by’ on industry and fiscal year, or using proc means. I’m not sure what NACE rev 2 means. Typical industry variables are SIC and NAICS (or GIC maybe).

Hope this helps,

Joost
