Hello Joost,

I am trying to retrieve data from Compustat North America based on the data item numbers. I don’t know how to do this and I cannot find any tutorials covering the topic. Many accounting researchers have used the descriptive terms in their papers (McNichols and Wilson, 1988; Jones, 1991; McNichols, 2002; Bergstresser and Phillippon, 2006; DeChow et. al, 2008; Ettredge et. al, 2010; Krishnan et. al, 2011; and others).

What are the recommended approaches or procedures for using the data item definitions to retrieve the associated data into a spreadsheet?

I hope there is some way to do this?

Thanks for all your help.

hi Komla,

I have not come across a ‘translation’ table that would give the ‘new’ variable names for each ‘old’ name.

Here is a link to the legacy’ Compustat manual from 2003, which describes the ‘old’ variables: http://www.batd.eu/debodt/downloads/compustat_user_all.pdf

best regards,

Joost

Hi Joost,

There are not enough words to express my appreciation, but thanks a million.
