I have a simple question regarding the DATAFMT of Compustat. I was wondering what the difference between summ_std and std is? Could I use std alone since the two seems to overlap some?

p.s. I am aware (and have read) that Compustat has description for the two, but I still don’t quite understand the difference. Sorry if my questions seems amateur, I am quite new at this.

hi JC,

That is a valid question, and honestly, I don’t know the answer smile

The sample programs WRDS provided when the data format was changed into the current format includes a statement like:

if indfmt='INDL' and datafmt='STD' and popsrc='D' and consol='C'

See for an example (+some explanation) http://wrds-web.wharton.upenn.edu/wrds/support/Data/_003Sample Programs/Compustat/compna_funda1.cfm

best regards,

Joost
