Joost and Everyone here,

I have a couple quick (silly) question here about IBES act Summary with Price and Ancillary file.

1) what is the int0dats? the variable definition is the interim period end date, however, what is the interim period first? is it the period of IBES data got updated?

2) it seems this summary file is reporting the stock price and outstanding shares every month after the fiscal period end. My question here is how could this file be useful to researchers? is it easy for anyone to merge IBES and CRSP and get all these information? why every month after the fiscal period end, why not quarters?

I guess I just didn’t have the intuition for this table yet.

Thanks a lot,
Zenghui

hi Zenghui,

I think interim data are quarters that have been reported; the manual says “The Interim Actuals data refers to quarterly and semi-annual periods.”

It looks like it shows the most recent quarter. So, in the data you show, between April 15 and May 20, IBM reported their quarterly earnings for the quarter ending March 31.

I suppose the ‘extra’ data is for convenience. Look at Audit Analytics; their data is superheavy with many excess variables.

best regards,

Joost

Joost,

Thanks a lot.

It still puzzles me that the statpers periods are actually after the the FY0EDATs (the fiscal year end date).
Maybe this file is only trying to summarize the stock price and shares outstanding after the fiscal year end date?

Best,
Zenghui

hi Zenghui,

The statpers is the date of the IBES records; so actuals (by definition) can only be before that date. But I agree it is curious having duplicate info like that.

Edit: just noticed I didn’t read your comment correctly (about FY0EDATS ); I suppose it holds actuals for both most recent quarter and year? It is somewhat confusing..

best regards,

Joost
