A naive question: how to match option_grant in Planed_Equity_Awards and its expiration date from “outstanding_equity_awards”?

I have options’ grant date at the Planed Award Equity file, but I do not have the expiration date from this file. I assume the correct way to do is to get the expiration date from the Outstanding_Equity_Awards file. Both of these files are in ExecuComp file.

hi Wenfeng,

I can’t seem to find the ‘Planed Award Equity file’ (Do you mean ‘Plan Based Awards’?). Did getting the expiration date from Outstanding_Equity_Awards work for you? (Can ‘GRNTNUM’ be matched with OUTAWDNUM’?)

best regards,

Joost

Yes you are right. But GRNTNUM could not be matched to OUTAWDNUM. I think they are independently coded.

ok, I see.

How much observations would you need to have for your study? It looks like this kind of data is included in XBRL (but that would limit #obs). (I didn’t verify what is exactly in there, but there is are XBRL tags like ‘us-gaap_ShareBasedCompensationArrangementByShareBasedPaymentAwardOptionsForfeituresAndExpirationsInPeriodWeightedAverageExercisePriceAbstract’)

best regards,

I had a similar question and did some research on how these two ExecuComp tables can be matched: There is no unique identifier, so matching is somewhat messy.

Here is some sample SAS code that matched both datasets: http://astro.temple.edu/~lnaveen/documents/deltavega_2013.sas

The authors matched on the exercise price for an option tranche:
“round off the expric since this is sometimes rounded off in outstanding table but not in the planbased table, which creates problems with the merge;”
