Hi Joost,

I found that CRSP CUSIP has 8 digits. However, Compustat has 9 digits. The difference is in the last digit.

May I know how CRSP and Compstuat construct their CUSIP? What does the last digit mean?

Is CRSP CUSIP current cusip and Compustat cusip historical?

Thank you very much!

Anna

hi Anna,

The last digit in the 9-digit CUSIP is a checksum, and can be dropped.

This page has a helpful overview of various keys for matching purposes: http://firestone.princeton.edu/econlib/Match.htm

I believe both CUSIPs are current (‘header’) but I am not sure (so please check!)

I ran this code on Compustat Funda; there are no changes in CUSIP. You could run similar code on the CRSP dataset.

/* get all unique gvkey-cusip combinations */
proc sql;

create table work.as select distinct gvkeycusip from comp.funda where fyear 2000 ;
quit;

/* count the number of different cusips for each gkvey */
proc sql;

create table work.z2 as select gvkeycount(*) as numCusips from work.z group by gvkey ;
quit;

/* see if there is any records where the cusip changes */
data work.z3;
set work.z2;
if
numCusips 1;
run

best regards,

Joost

hi Anna,

In another thread, Zenghui has posted this link (http://richardp.bus.usu.edu/research/); there is code that matches CRSP and Compustat and looks into delistings as well.

best regards,

Joost
