Hi all,

would you share tips on How to do key word searches using non-WRDS data. for example, if we search for specific company disclosures in press release (e.g. LexisNexis etc) , or search some information from IPO prospectus.

what kind of programs do we write? any macros you can share?

Thanks in advance,

- R

hi Rochelle,

I have looked into that in the past. There are 2 sources with very high quality coverage: Lexis Nexis and Factiva. Unfortunately, the terms of service of these providers are such that ‘spiders’ etc are not allowed. I know someone who pulled that off, and his institution got charged for ‘excess’ use. So, these sources are ‘great’ for manual use only.

There are some alternatives though. There is highbeam.com and Google News archives. The terms of highbeam are not clear, but you can pretty much use their services under ‘any’ name. smile

By the way, google News archives searches in news archives only, so you won’t get millions of unrelated hits (https://news.google.com/news/advanced_news_search?as_drrb=a).

Hope this helps,

Joost
